Getting Started
-
Before you take off in your kayak make sure that all of your equipment is in working order and that you are wearing your safety flotation device. The best way to get into the kayak is from the side of a low pier. When you are stepping into the kayak try to always keep your weight within the center line of the kayak to avoid tipping. Get a firm grip on the cockpit and keep most of your weight in your hands as you lower yourself into the center of the cockpit. Make sure to place the paddle within easy reach so you can grab it as soon as you get centered in the kayak. Another option is to step in the kayak from the beach, and either push off using your paddle or have an other person push you into the water.
Once you are in the boat, you will need to actively work to keep the kayak balanced. You will find that balance is easily achieved when you keep your upper body relaxed and perpendicular to the water. Try to relax your stomach and lower back so the kayak has a freer tilt. Also, keeping your eyes on the horizon, much like driving, will help maintain balance. Refrain from holding the kayak, as that makes it easier tip and does not provide added support. If at any time you lose balance and need support, quickly slap the water with back face of your paddle.
Paddling
-
When paddling, make sure that you are always holding the paddle with the curved side facing down toward the water. If you need power and control in the water you will want a wide grip on the paddle whereas a narrow grip typically works best for long distance paddling. Keep good posture when paddling: sit up straight, open your chest and relax your shoulders and keep your legs together for maximum torso rotation. When stroking the paddle the movement should mainly come from the torso with the arms acting as an extension. To move forward, move the blade out of the water and back and away from the kayak. When you lift the blade out of the water, lead with your elbow and allow the wrist to follow. Once the elbow is lifted, prepare for your next stroke by twisting your upper torso to allow the strokes to be as far forward as possible. This method of paddling should allow for maximum water strokes without wearing your body too quickly.
