How to Use Rubber Cement on Hypalon
Hypalon is a brand name for the synthetic rubber called chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE). This rubber is manufactured in a lab and has many of the same properties as natural rubber. The flexible material is used in roofing, raft and boat making and other strong, flexible products. Hypalon was manufactured by DuPont, which ceased the manufacture of the material in April 2010. However, many older items are still made from the material. Gluing Hypalon is not difficult, and most glues designed for use with rubber will work with Hypalon.

Instructions

1
Cut the rubber patch in a circular shape two inches beyond every side of the hole.
-
2
Sand the area surrounding the cut with medium-grit sandpaper. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth.
-
3
Spread a layer of rubber cement onto the patch and the base surface of the Hypalon. Wait for the glue to get tacky to the touch. Apply a second and third layer of glue over the first, allowing each to become tacky before applying the next layer.
-
4
Place the patch over the hole. Use a roller to squeeze out any air between the patch and base surface. Wipe up any excess glue with a damp cloth. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours before using the item.
