How to Splice Elastic Rope

Elastic rope is ideal for securing boating and camping items, tying down luggage on your car or securing items in the bed of a truck. Elastic rope needs a special kind of device for splicing because of its stretchy nature. If you use elastic rope frequently, it's a good idea to carry a splice fastener in your tool box in case of rope emergencies. Use this method to seal the ends of one rope to make a loop or to combine ropes to make a longer one.

Instructions

Cut the hook or end piece off of the elastic rope if there is one. Wrap the cut end with electrical tape, or the tape provided in the splice fastener kit, to prevent it from fraying. Most kits will provide all the materials you need to make a splice, but electrical tape works well in a pinch.

Insert the taped end into one of the tubes on the splice fastener. Hammer the pins into the holes in the fastener, following the manufacturer's instructions. The pins go through the rope to the other side of the splice fastener tube, securing the rope in the tube.

Cut the other rope end and prepare it with tape if needed. Insert it in the other tube of the splice fastener and hammer the pins in. You should have two pieces of rope, side by side, in the splice tubes.
