How to Splice a Core Rope

Various outdoor activities involve the use of rope. From tying and lashing to climbing, ropes are used to accomplish outdoor tasks. Core ropes are used for rock climbing and feature a woven nylon sheath designed to protect an inner core. Splicing two rope lengths together is often necessary to obtain one longer length. A basic knot that is quickly tied and strong is advantageous in a climbing situation.

Lay the end of the two core ropes you want to splice side by side.

    • 2

Measure 3 feet from the end of the ropes. Pick up the ropes and hold them together 3 feet from the end to form a double line.

Form an overhand knot with the doubled line. Make a loop with the two lines 3 feet from the end. Feed the free end of both lines through the loop.
