How to Mark Climbing Ropes

Experienced climbers know that a center mark on your rope can be a very useful guide. During a rappel on a single rope, the center serves as the rappel anchor. For a belayer, the center mark helps them to estimate how much rope is left as they guide a climber down. For climbers that use a butterfly coiling technique, having a mark in the middle can make the coiling process twice as fast. While some ropes come with midpoints already marked on them, it is very easy to make your own mark with a permanent marker or tape. Just make sure it's actually the middle before making the mark.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your ropes entire length and divide that number in half. Measure the mid-point on the rope using this calculation.

    • 2

Use a black permanent marker to designate the mid-point. Check the rope manufacturer's website to find a marker made specifically for your rope. Keep in mind that the UIAA Safety Commission did tests with felt-tipped permanent marker pens and found that they could actually weaken a rope. Avoid using a marker or substance not specifically approved by the rope manufacturer.

    • 3

Use duct tape or electrical tape to mark your mid-point. Wrap a piece securely around the middle of the rope, but understand that this method will need replaced often because of caribiner wear and tear.

    • 4

Stitch bright sewing thread through the middle of the rope for a more permanent marker than tape. Replace the thread when it gets too dirty to be seen.

    • 5

Purchase a bi-rope which changes color or pattern at the middle of the rope. Use this as an easy and reliable way to spot the middle of your rope every time you climb.
