How to Use Tree Climbing Rope

Tree climbing is a relatively new sport that involves climbers scaling trees and maneuvering around and through the upper branches. Tree climbing has evolved into a sport of its own, borrowing from other activities including big wall climbing, bouldering and arborist activities. The development and popularity of tree climbing is also partially due to the availability of trees over rock structures. Specialized equipment such as harnesses, ropes and helmets, along with proper training, are required for safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch a lead throw line attached to a weight over the limb of a tree. Feed the rope to allow the weighted end to return to the ground.

    • 2

Attach the climbing rope to the lead throw line and pull up and over the tree limb. Use the climbing rope rather than the lead throw for climbing.

    • 3

Place line savers on contact points where rope may come into contact with the bark of the tree. These also are referred to as cambium savers.

    • 4

Attach the rope to a climbing harness, or saddle, which is worn while climbing. The harness is required safety equipment designed to fit securely around the waist and legs.

    • 5

Attach carabiners, figure eights, ascenders and other equipment to tree climbing ropes to aid in climbing and rappelling.
