How to Cure Moisture in RV Floorspace

Moisture in the floor of your RV can lead to the floor rotting and/or mold and mildew growing inside your motor home. If you are unable to clean a spill immediately or the floor has become wet as a result of a leak, there are a few things you can do to dry it out. If you are unable to get all the moisture out of the carpet and floor, it may require replacement.

Instructions

Open all the window and roof vents in your RV. Remove any loose items and peel up the carpet in the affected area. Generally, once the carpet has been flooded, the glue will break down and removing the carpet is easier. Lay the carpet flat -- either in your basement or on the garage floor. Use a "wet vacuum" and remove as much moisture as possible from the carpet. Place the carpet in the sun, and allow it dry.

Observe the damage to the floor and see if any mold or mildew has begun to grow. If you notice mold or mildew, it may be better to replace the affected portion of the floor. If the floor is simply wet, then you can continue to dry the floor to get the moisture out of the wood.

Place a large fan on the floor, and direct it toward the affected area. Turn on the fan, and allow it to run overnight. Place a thermometer that displays the humidity level in the RV, and monitor the moisture level. Once the moisture has been removed and the humidity level is at a normal level, remove the fan from the RV. Wait an additional 24 hours before reinstalling the carpet.

Reinstall the carpet, then replace the items and any furnishings you removed. Your RV is ready to be used again.
