How to Make S'mores Over a Fire

The classic s'more is a tasty treat, especially when camping in the wilderness. The s'more came about around the beginning of the 20th century. The name of the snack derives from a contraction of the two words "some more," because whenever you eat one s'more, you are going to want a second helping. You don't have to be a Boy Scout to put together this sweet snack. On your next camping trip, enjoy a toasty marshmallow blended with melting chocolate on a crunchy graham cracker.

Instructions

    • 1

Build a fire in a safe, dry place. Gather your kindling from nature or purchase it at a store. Let the fire blaze for a while, as the best s'more toasting happens over hot coals rather than leaping flames.

    • 2

Break a graham cracker into two halves. On one half place two to three squares of chocolate. If you want the chocolate to melt, place the graham cracker with the chocolate somewhere near the fire as you roast the marshmallow.

    • 3

Spear a large marshmallow on the end of sharp stick. It is usually easiest to find the stick in nature, peeling away the bark at one end and sharpening it to a point. Roasting sticks can also be bought at an outdoors store. Make your own at home by unwinding a wire hanger. Roast large marshmallows for the best results. Roast up to three or four marshmallows at one time.

    • 4

Suspend the marshmallow out over the hot coals. Hold it 1 to 2 inches above the coals, being careful not to let the flames catch it. Rotate your stick slowly as the marshmallow cooks. For the best results, cook your marshmallow slowly and evenly.

    • 5

Place the marshmallow on the graham cracker and chocolate. The marshmallow is done cooking when it is a golden brown color. Set the other half of the graham cracker on top of the marshmallow, creating a sandwich. Put a little pressure on the top cracker, and pull your stick back to remove it from the marshmallow.

Cool the s'more for a few minutes before eating. Remember that the marshmallow has come directly from the fire, and it can be hot enough to burn. Waiting a few moments also allows the chocolate to melt into the marshmallow, for a delicious sticky treat.
