How to Fix Up a Camper

Learning to fix your camper at home can save you a lot of time and money you might otherwise spend at your local RV dealership. Labor costs tend to be expensive, and during peak camping season, it can take weeks to get your repaired camper back. Pick up all the supplies you need at your local home improvement store and you will be able to fix up your camper over the weekend.

      Wash the exterior of your camper with mild detergent designed for recreational vehicles. Fully extend the awning and gently wash it with a soft scrub brush or cloth. Let it completely dry. Wipe down the interior walls and surfaces of your camper.

      Examine the awning for tears or other damage. Sew each area closed by hand with a needle and thread. Cut out a canvas patch that will cover the damaged area and blend in with the awning fabric. Sew it over your repair to prevent future leaks. Roll the awning back up and secure it.

      Inspect the interior walls for holes and punctures. Fill pinholes with liquid correction fluid and fill larger damaged areas with white drywall filler. Sand the area by hand after it dries. For darker surfaces, fill the holes with matching, tinted drywall filler.

      Stand on a ladder and examine the roof of your camper for damaged areas. Cut a piece of aluminum sealing tape to cover small holes. Smooth it over the hole with your hand for a tight seal. Apply roof sealant to the edges of a piece of aluminum siding to cover larger holes. Place the siding over the hole and then cover it completely with aluminum sealing tape to attach it to the roof. Paint over all roof repairs to blend in with the roof color.

      Locate any leaks around the camper's roof vents. Apply RV putty to the damaged area. Caulk the roof vent for a tight seal.
