1
Mark out a square encompassing the damaged section of wood. Clear away any items from the area under the damaged wood to ensure that they won't get dirty or damaged.
-
2
Cut out the square on your mark using a rotary tool with a cutting bit. Pull out the damaged wood section.
-
3
Sand down the edges of the cut-out hole using fine grit sandpaper. Notice that there is a space between the roof material and the wood. Some campers may have a thin layer of insulation in the space as well.
-
4
Cut three pieces of 1/8-inch stock to measure 2 inches wide and 4 inches longer than the width of your cut-out square. These will be placed above the square hole as supportive cross braces.
-
5
Apply outdoor adhesive to the both ends of the cut 1/8 inch stock. Fit the three pieces inside the space above the cut-out hole and space them evenly apart, one being positioned across the center of the cut-out square. Allow the adhesive to set completely.
-
6
Cut a matching replacement piece of wood to fit the dimensions of the cut-out square. Apply outdoor adhesive to the 1/8 inch stock cross braces that you just inserted. Press the replacement wood onto the cross braces and hold in position until it sets.
-
7
Fill the cracks around the replacement wood with exterior wood putty. Allow the putty to dry. Sand down the putty if protruding from the cracks until the putty is flush with the camper roof. Repaint the area to match.
