Toy Hauler Tips
-
Preparation
-
Preparing your toy hauler for a trip ensures a safe journey and prevents damage to the trailer and cargo. Any recreational vehicles or large cargo should be secured to the floor in the trailer portion of the hauler to prevent it from shifting or moving during transport. Close all windows and place any vents, antennae and awnings in their traveling position. It is recommended that you check the tire pressure and make sure you have all necessary tools to change a flat.
Hauling
-
Pulling a toy hauler is slightly different from a normal travel trailer because of the extra weight located at the back. The cargo area has a reinforced frame that, combined with cargo or recreational vehicles, can cause the trailer to be back-heavy. It is essential you allow extra distance when stopping and take sharp corners at low speeds. Most toy haulers are equipped with electric brakes that will help stop the trailer but need a special controller wired to the tow vehicle.
Setup
-
When arriving at your camping destination, leave room at the rear of the trailer to extend the ramp gate. You should also leave enough room for any slide-out rooms or awnings. Stabilize the toy hauler using the extendable jack plates or jack stands, which allow you to unload your cargo safely. Never unload the trailer while it is not stabilized or properly hitched to a vehicle, as this could cause the trailer to tip backward. Toy haulers should be parked on level ground to allow the ramp to reach the ground to prevent damage.
Maintenance
-
Maintenance is an important duty when owning any camping trailer to maintain its structural integrity and key components. The wheel bearings and tires should be checked before every trip for excess wear and be replaced as needed. Storing a toy hauler in cold climates requires proper winterization, including draining and filling the plumbing system with antifreeze and cleaning the heating system before use. A trailer cover will reduce wear and prevent standing water or snow from damaging the roof or windows.
