How to Live in Yurts in the Winter

Living in yurts in the winter is possible with a consistent heat source and water supply. The yurt is capable of handling strong winds and heavy snow loads and is often used as a survival shelter in mountainous regions. Living through the winter is more difficult than in most homes but it is a viable option. Yurt dwellers must be prepared for adverse living conditions in a low insulation structure. Although the living is tough at times, many yurt owners find the low impact living experience to be rewarding.

Instructions

    • 1

Insulate the yurt interior to retain heat during the winter. Staple temporary insulation and heat reflectors to the wall frame and ceiling frame of the yurt. The staples and insulation are easily removed during the summer months.

    • 2

Build an elevated sleeping loft above your kitchen or office area. The loft places you in warmest part of the yurt and increases comfort throughout the cold night. Use multiple blankets, sleeping bags and an electric blanket to add heat as necessary.

    • 3

Install snow and wind braces on the yurt to prevent damage during the winter. The braces are vertical 2-by-4s arranged inside of the walls. The 2-by-4s attach to a 2-by-6 rafter with a metal bracket. Space the supports less than 1 foot apart for heavy snow loads and more than 1 foot apart for low and moderate snow loads.

    • 4

Use a broom to remove snow from the roof as it accumulates by punching the fabric from the inside and knocking snow off the edges of the structure on the outside. You are not likely to reach all of the snow but you will remove some of the stress from the structure.

    • 5

Install a wood burning stove in the yurt to create heat during the winter. Split and season firewood to create a steady supply of heat throughout the winter. The stove may also be used for cooking and heating water. Place a coat rack close to the stove area for drying and warming clothes.

Fill a freshwater tank inside of the yurt. Insulate the plumbing to prevent pipes from freezing and drain the pipes when the yurt is not heated.
