How to Register a Pop Up Camper in New York State

New York state requires a pop-up camper be registered like any other motor vehicle. The state requires a New York insurance card, proof of ownership, proof of sales tax paid, a fee based on the weight of the camper and a picture ID. To register the pop-up, go to a branch of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

      Contact a New York state insurance provider. Out-of-state insurance is not accepted for registering the vehicle in New York. Once the insurance is paid, ask the company to fax or mail you a New York state insurance card, a FS-20.

      Collect the out-of-state title, or bill of sale if purchased new in New York. If purchased in New York, bring proof that NYS sales tax is paid. Bring the FS-20 and a picture ID to a branch of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

      Request New York form MV-20 and fill it out completely. Submit this form along with the other documents, and the fee, based on the weight of the pop-up. This information is on the old title, or in the user manual and is required on MV-20.

      Pay for the registration and receive the pop-up license plates and stickers indicating it is now legal. Place the plate on the pop-up as directed and place the registration sticker on the plate.
