Set Up the Tent
-
1
Set up your tent in an area that is not in the open and is close to larger plants, rocks or trees. You don't want a large, unusual object sticking out like a sore thumb in the forest, desert or mountain area standing alone. Placing the tent next to a larger object will help the tent not be obvious.
-
2
Use a camouflage tarp to cover your tent, using tent stakes to hold it securely to the ground. Tarps area available in a variety of natural colors to coordinate with the surroundings you will have at your camp site. There are different sizes, strengths, waterproofing and other qualities to consider when purchasing a camouflage tarp.
-
3
Secure the tarp to the ground using tent stakes (or stakes provided with the tarp) with a rubber mallet.
-
4
Find freshly fallen, lightweight branches on the ground to lean against the tent if you do not have a tarp available at your campsite.
Blend in the Camp Area
-
5
Set up chairs that coordinate with the forest (green), rocks (brown or orange) or desert (sand) to allow them to blend in with the natural setting. Keep the chairs close to the tent area in the campsite to not draw attention to an unnatural object.
-
6
Place rocks around the campfire circle to act as a natural border. Rocks are a natural material and can be placed back in their original position after use.
-
7
Wear clothes and gear that coordinate with the colors of your natural environment. As you spend time in the wilderness, your movement will be less obvious if you blend in as well. According to Outdoorhub.com, using charcoal or mud on the exposed skin reduces human visibility in the wilderness. This site also explains how shadows and quick movement can expose you in the wilderness, so stay close to vegetation and travel slowly and quietly.
-
8
Place tarps or branches over coolers, tubs or any other extra objects that will not be stored inside the tent. If space allows, do put items in the camouflaged tent. The smaller space your campsite occupies, the less obvious it will be.
