How to Carry a Canoe on a Jeep Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler has been a popular sport utility vehicle for many years. Though many models have been released over the years, the basic design of the Jeep has remained recognizable. The Jeep Wrangler's rugged build and its four wheel drive feature lets drivers get in and out of areas far off the beaten path--deep mud, mountain passes, even shallow rivers. Jeeps are extremely popular vehicles with many outdoor enthusiasts, including canoe runners, kayakers and mountain bikers. Transporting your favorite outdoor toy, such as a canoe or kayak, on top of your Jeep can be easily accomplished, provided that you have the appropriate equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a canoe rack or transport blocks onto the top of the Jeep Wrangler, as per the manufacturers instructions. The installation procedure varies with each type rack and transport system.

    • 2

Find a friend to help you lift the canoe onto the canoe rack, or onto the transport blocks. Place the canoe upside-down, centered over the top of the jeep, with the bow over the hood and the aft over the rear of the jeep, hanging evenly over both ends.

    • 3

Tighten any straps on the canoe rack if provided, as per the manufacturer's instructions. If using blocks, or no straps are provided with the rack, loop rope through the front cross-brace of the canoe, and tie it to the front bumper securely. Repeat the process for the aft of the canoe, running rope through the opposite cross-brace, and tying down to the rear bumper.
