How to Select Oars

Using the proper oars for your rowboat can make the difference between an easy, efficient row and an exhausting or slow journey. It is important to select oars that fit the length and style of the boat you own. While oar length is a matter of personal taste, there are standard measurements and materials to help you figure out your preference.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the span of your boat from oar lock to oar lock. Divide the measurement in half and then add 2 inches to determine the length of the oar from the end grip to the oar lock fitting.

    • 2

Calculate the length of the oar. Sit in a chair and measure from your chair to your nose. Add this number to the height of your rowboat seat and add the length of the paddle blade.

    • 3

Select oars that match the measurements from step 1 and step 2.

    • 4

Select a tapered grip for longer oars and a barrel grip for oars under 7 feet.

    • 5

Decide on an oar blade shape. Flat blades are used as all-purpose oars. Spoon blades are suited for more pulling power and speed. If your boat is larger, you may want to try a wide spoon blade.
