How to Select a Pedometer

1
Evaluate what functions you need on a pedometer. Determine whether you want a pedometer that is easy to use, with commands available at the touch of one button. Alternatively, you may prefer to have multiple buttons to represent different commands such as heart rate monitoring.
-
2
Choose a pedometer that fits comfortably. Decide whether the pedometer provides the right fit and it is not too bulky and uncomfortable. Make sure the pedometer provides sturdiness and does not fall off while running. Some waterproof pedometers are also available if you participate in water exercises.
-
3
Pick a pedometer with the right features. If you want something with little or no setup required, select a pedometer that features a step counter. If you are technologically well informed and prefer many bells and whistles, choose a pedometer that features an internal memory, Internet uploads that track your fitness progress, distance walked, calories burned and more.
-
4
Decide how much you want to pay for a pedometer. As of 2010, pedometers range in price from $10 to $50 depending on the brand, type and where you purchase the device.
-
5
Opt for a clip-on pedometer that you can attach to a waistband or a belt. Make sure to position the clip-on horizontally to the ground so that it does not dangle. A pedometer that is positioned correctly will give you an accurate reading. If you prefer, try a pedometer you can wear on your wrist like a watch. Buy a wrist pedometer that fits properly and stays in place while you walk, jog or run.
