How to Install Flotation Bags in a Canoe
When using canoe flotation bags, where you place them equally is important as to the installation itself. Flotation bags provide extra buoyancy to the craft, which is particularly important when whitewater paddling. In addition to the extra buoyancy, the flotation bags occupy space in the canoe, preventing excess water from building up. Thinking symmetrically helps when placing the buoyancy and flotation bags in the canoe. In addition, many flotation bags allow gear to be stored in a watertight enclosure.

1
Place soft gear (clothing, etc) into the flotation bags. Blow into the bag's valve to partially inflate the bladder.
-
2
Place a flotation bag under the front seat and near the front of the canoe. Lash the bag to the thwarts or the seat supports. Most flotation bags have installed bungee cords or lashings.
-
3
Place another flotation bag under the rear seat. Attach the bungees or lashing cords to the seat attachment supports or to the canoe thwarts, which are the beams that run across the canoe between the sides.
-
4
Inflate the flotation bags fully by blowing into the valves. Once filled, reposition by pushing or making small adjustments, ensuring the bags are firm against the canoe hull.
