How to Make a Repelling Harness from Rope
-
1
Examine the length of rope to ensure there are no cuts, frays or other visible areas of weakness. Ensure the rope is of suitable diameter for climbing or, in this case, harness tying.
-
2
Fold the rope in half with the free, or tag, ends of the rope even with one another.
-
3
Place the folded, or looped, end of the rope on the hip opposite from the hand used for braking. Braking is done with the dominant or stronger hand. For example, if right handed, then the loop will be on the left hip.
-
4
Wrap the rope around the waist, making sure to keep the center point of the loop stationary at the hip. It is important to keep the rope centered at the hip. Wrap the rope just above the hip bones. Hold the rope in front with the hands just forward and on both sides of the stomach.
-
5
Tie a double overhand knot by first bringing the left side over the right, then the right side over the left. Double check the knot ensuring it is tight but is comfortable against the body. Let the loose ends of rope hang onto the ground.
-
6
Pick up the loose ends and pull them between the legs and up to the buttocks. Feed the rope ends up and underneath the rope which is around the waist. The ropes should be separate and located just above the rear pant pockets as a reference. Adjust the tightness of the ropes and pull the ropes back down, keeping them separate and back between the legs.
-
7
Bring the ropes back to the front, cross the ropes in the front and wrap around the waist stopping at the hip opposite the brake hand. Tie a square knot by feeding the right over left and then left over right. Double check the knot to ensure it is secure.
-
8
Tie an overhand knot on either side of the square knot as safety knots. Double check all knots and the overall fit and security of the harness.
