Snacks provide much-needed energy for the six-hour hike. Pack water, snacks, walking shoes and comfortable clothing for your trip. If you are hiking in the winter, pack snowshoes instead of walking shoes. The round trip will take more than six hours, and you will need food and water to enjoy your hike.

2
Purchase a National Forest Adventure Pass. No purchase is necessary for actually hiking, but you do need this pass to park your vehicle. Passes can be purchased at ranger stations in Baldy Village or Big Pine, from local merchants or online through the U.S. Forest Service. The cost is $5 per day, or $30 for an annual pass.

3
Fire permits must be obtained to start campfires. Obtain a fire permit if you plan on camping from the Angeles National Forest District. Camping is permitted, but this free permit must be obtained to use a camping stove or to start a campfire.

Choose your route. There are four different routes to the summit of the mountain. The eastern route takes advantage of the ski lift from Manker Flats to Baldy Notch. However, if you want to hike the entire way, you can continue up the service road to the summit. The southern route begins on San Antonio Road, which is paved. It then continues up the San Antonio Canyon, which passes the Sierra Club Ski Hut, and continues to the summit. The northern trail is eight miles long and starts off of Blue Ridge Road and travels on North Backbone Trail. The western trail begins at Baldy Village and is 12-miles round trip. It climbs the south ridge of Mount Baldy, which is very steep. This trail is recommended only for experienced hikers.

5
Consult the forest service to ensure conditions are safe. Many parts of the mountain might be closed because of fire danger or when conditions are icy.

6
Begin your hike. Keep in mind that all four routes are strenuous and might challenge even seasoned hikers. Be sure not to overexert yourself.
