How to Rapel Down a Cliff

Rappelling down a cliff is for many a sport in itself. For others it is a necessity that goes along with climbing. Either way, it should be enjoyed safely. Rappelling down a cliff is essentially walking backward down the cliff. As you become more comfortable, confident, and capable, add short hops to the rappel. With experience, you might want to try rappels in which you will not be in contact with the cliff once you go over the side.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a knot in the end of the rope to keep it from slipping through your rappel device.

    • 2

Grasp the rope, doubling it to form a loop, and feed it into the rappel device.

    • 3

Hook the rope to the carabiner used to attach your rappel device to the harness.

    • 4

Remove the slack from the line, and apply tension to the rope. Check that everything is hooked up correctly.

    • 5

Grasp the rope in front of you with your left hand and at your right hip with your right hand. Your left hand will guide you down the rope. Your right hand will be used to apply braking force. As you bring your right hand up, you will increase friction, which increases braking force.

    • 6

Apply full braking force as you turn around, and slowly step over the edge backward. As you rappel, sit in the harness, letting it support your weight.

    • 7

Release the applied braking force slowly to allow yourself to walk backward down the cliff.
