Adjust to the altitude. Because your body is not used to operating at high altitudes, you are going to need an adjustment period. Higher altitudes have a lower oxygen supply, which will make even minimal tasks feel like a struggle. Spend a few days at a higher altitude at the beginning of your training and prior to climbing Mount Whitney to allow your body time to adjust.

Get into shape. Because of the length and grueling nature of climbing Mount Whitney, it is essential that your body is in peak physical condition. To get into shape, either setup a workout and nutrition plan or higher a physical trainer who can get you into shape.

Complete several preliminary climbs. Find some climbs near where you are located that will require you to hike several thousand feet in a day and travel ten miles or more. This type of strenuous climbing with give you a sample of what climbing Mount Whitney will feel like. Once you are comfortable with completing several strenuous climbs, you will have the proper training to climb Mount Whitney.
