1
Charter a boat or take along an experienced sailfish guide. These guides provide invaluable knowledge when fishing for these great game fish.
-
2
Find a good supply of ballyhoo for bait. Cast a net over a school of ballyhoo and increase the haul by chumming the water with oatmeal. Two or three bucketfuls will suffice.
-
3
Troll the ballyhoo behind a boat. This is the preferred method for keeping the bait interesting and the boat moving. Move the trolling line through any prime sailfish areas.
-
4
Watch for schools of baitfish. Sailfish strike baitfish with their bills to stun the prey. Sailfish herd their prey into small schools and strike from behind and return for the stunned fish.
-
5
Set the hook hard when the bait is taking or struck. The sailfish have very hard bills and need an extra effort to set the hook.
-
6
Hold onto the fishing pole and rig firmly. Sailfish are powerful and need to tire before being brought onboard.
