Know where to find them. Mahi mahi are found throughout the world, but mostly in warm (between 75 and 85 degrees) waters that are about 100 to 400 feet deep. They are primarily found in the gulf stream. Weed lines or floating objects, such as buoys, are their favorite spots to attract food. Look for flying fish, as mahi mahi will probably be nearby. They never stray too far from their food source.

Choose your tackle. Since mahi mahi range in size from 5 to 80 pounds, selecting the right tackle is the most important step. Most experienced fishermen will choose a 20- to 30-foot reel with a 5- to 6-foot spinning rod accompanied by 20- to 30-pound monofilament.

3
Choose your bait. As far as bait goes, Ballyhoo is one of mahi mahi's favorites. Artificial lures, feathers and spoons all work well in the light tackle methods.

4
Set out to catch one. Trolling for these prized fish is the preferred method of chasing them. The ideal speed is 6 to 8 knots. Cast your spinning rod as you troll.

5
Get ready. Prepare yourself for a fast hit. Catching one of these sea creatures is a truly exciting experience. Its high-jumping, acrobatic features, neon-bright colors and Herculean strength make it a much-sought-after game fish. Hang on to your rod and enjoy.

Keep them biting. Once you locate and catch a small one, keep it. This will attract more. Chumming with small minnow or any type of bait will also add to an exciting fishing trip.
