How to Make a Steel Leader

Leaders are typically short in length and are attached to the end of the main fishing line before a hook or lure. Leaders serve different purposes based on the material from which it is made. Monofilament leaders provide shock absorption for a line while stainless steel leaders resist large toothy fresh and saltwater game fish. Steel leaders require a few basic terminal components to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose stainless steel leader wire in a pound test and length based on the fishing situation for which it will be used. For example, use a 4-foot length of 200-pound test steel leader wire for large saltwater fish such as shark. Choose an 18 to 24-inch length of 15 to 20-pound test steel leader wire for smaller in-shore saltwater game fish and large toothy freshwater game fish. Cut the wire to length with a pair of wire cutters. Allow 6 inches extra length for the loop and crimping.

Slide a crimp collar onto one end of the steel leader wire. Place a barrel swivel on the wire in front of the crimp collar.

    • 3

Form a loop 1 inch from the end of the wire and position the eye of the swivel in the loop.

    • 4

Slide the crimp collar down over the free end of the steel leader wire so that 1/2 inch of the free end extends from the collar. Crimp the collar down tightly around the main and free end of the wire with pliers.

    • 5

Place another crimp collar on the opposite end of the wire. Slide a swivel snap onto the wire, form a loop with the eye of the swivel snap inside and slide the crimp collar down over the free end of the wire. Crimp the collar down tightly with pliers.
