How to Tie a Wire Leader

Wire lines are used by anglers as leaders to prevent the fishing line from breaking. Lines may break apart due to abrasion, tangling or by sharp-toothed fish. Wire leaders are typically constructed from several metal strands and are made of stainless steel. Tie a wire leader using a strong, reliable knot to prevent your lines from snapping off, especially when you're about to land a prized fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Pass 4 inches of the wire leader through the eye of the hook, swivel or lure. Fold the wire back so that it crosses over the standing part.

    • 2

Twist the tag end of the wire evenly around the standing end six times. Make sure the twists are straight and evenly spaced.

    • 3

Make six wraps by wrapping the tag end around the standing end to form barrel-like wraps.

    • 4

Bend half an inch of the tag end at a 90-degree angle to form a small crank handle. Twist the handle back and forth until the wire snaps off. This leaves a clean cut instead of a sharp spur.
