How to Tie Lineman's Knots

The lineman's knot, which is also called the alpine butterfly loop, is often used by campers and hikers because it can be very durable when done right and it can be tied in the middle of a rope as opposed to just on the end. It is great for hauling equipment or using to attach something to a stationary object.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the rope into a circle or oval shape.

    • 2

Make a second smaller circle inside the larger loop by bringing the ends together at the bottom. The two ends of the line should crisscross at the top of the smaller loop.

    • 3

Take the top portion of the larger loop and pull it under the smaller loop and then up through it. This will make it look like there are three loops now.

    • 4

Take the two ends of the rope and pull them through the outer loops. That is the knot. Shape the loop size as needed.
