How to Make a Line Release Clip

Fishing with planer boards or a kite requires a line release clip. A line release clip holds your fishing line to the line of the fishing equipment. When a fish strikes the lure or bait attached to the fishing line, the line releases from the clip. If you lose or do not have a line release clip, you can fabricate one with a few simple materials and tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a two inch by three inch piece from a plastic bucket with a utility knife.

    • 2

Measure up 1/2 inch from one end of a two inch side of the cut plastic piece with a steel rule. Mark the location with an awl.

    • 3

Set the base of a combination square against the three inch side of the plastic piece. Align the blade of the square with the 1/2 inch mark made earlier. Drag the awl across the plastic to mark a line. Make a small notch where the line contacts each side of the plastic with the utility knife.

    • 4

Place the zero end of the steel rule against one edge of the three inch side of the plastic. Make a center mark one inch in from the end of the steel rule with an awl. Extend the line across the face of the plastic with the combination square and awl to divide the plastic in half lengthwise.

    • 5

Set the marked plastic with the 1/2 inch line on your right-hand side. Align the zero end of the steel rule with the right side of the plastic. Make one mark 1 1/2 inches from the right and another 2 1/2 inches. Mark each location with the awl.

    • 6

Drill a 1/16 inch hole at each point where a mark crosses the marked centerline. You will have three holes 1/2, 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 inches from the right-hand side of the plastic piece.

    • 7

Cut a straight line along the marked center line starting from the end with the 1/2 inch line with two notches and continuing to the 1/16 inch hole sitting 1 1/2 inch up from that end with the utility knife.

    • 8

Cut a curved line from the hole furthest to the left to one three inch side of the plastic.

    • 9

Thread a paper clip in the hole 1/2 inch in from your right. Wrap a rubber band around the notches on the line with the hole containing the paper clip.

    • 10

Thread the line from your kite or planer boards through the curved line leading to the hole furthest to your left.
