Cod Fishing in Massachusetts

Part of the Massachusetts state seal, cod was first farmed by English colonists and continues to be an important economic industry to the state.
  1. Atlantic Cod

    • Known as cod, codfish, codling or scrod, Atlantic Cod flourishes in both Europe and North America's coastal Atlantic waters.

    Saltwater Fishing Permit

    • As of 2010, cod fishing in the state of Massachusetts requires a saltwater fishing permit, which in the 2011 season will change to a Division of Marine Fisheries permit.

    South and East of Cape Cod Regulations

    • South and east of Cape Cod, the cod season is open year-round, but only 10 cod may be retained with a 22 inch minimum length each.

    North of Cape Cod Regulations

    • Codfish season in areas north of Cape Cod run year round with a 24 inch minimum. From April 1 through Oct. 31, 10 fish can be retained. Only two fish per person can be retained from Nov. 1 through March 31.

    Spring and Winter Cod Conservation Zones

    • In the spring, from May 1 through June 30, and in the winter, from Dec. 1 through Jan. 31, all cod fishing is prohibited in respective areas marked “Spring and Winter Cod Conservation Zones.”
