How to Fix the Cannon Downriggers Parts Swivel Base

The Cannon downrigger is a cable and spool system used to control the depth of your fishing line. The cable attaches to a weighted ball and the line attaches to a clip on the cable. The line pulls free from the clip when a fish strikes and you are free to fight the fish with the rod. The downrigger is either mounted in a set position or on a swivel base. The swivel base moves and is susceptible to breakdowns. Basic screw and position issues are easily fixed, but large cracks and breaks in the material may require replacement.

Inspect the downrigger and determine the issue. Wiggle the unit to test the stability of the base. If the base is loose and wiggles, remove the mounting screws with a drill and shift the base 6 inches in either direction. Cover the screws with waterproof caulking and drill the screws back into the deck for a stable mount. The screws will pull loose if the downrigger endures hard contact from another boat or hard object.

Test the swivel by turning the downrigger if the base is firmly connected to the boat. Locate the swivel pin on the front of the base and check the pin for breaks. Broken pins cause the downrigger to spin freely. Unscrew the nut that holds the pin in place. Order a new pin from Cannon or a Cannon dealer to replace the broken pin piece.

Check the screws that hold the downrigger to the swivel plate if the downrigger is firmly connected to the boat but continues to wobble. Attempt tightening if any of the screws are loose. Add a waterproof sealing agent and replace any broken screws.
