How to Select a Baitcast Reel

Fishermen use baitcast reels for targeting fish species ranging from bass and walleyes to muskies and northern pike. The reels can handle heavier line and lures than other types of fishing reels can. Many experienced fishermen like using baitcast reels because they can be adjusted easily to fit a variety of fishing situations. There are a wide variety of baitcast reels available for fishermen, who should keep several things in mind as they go about selecting one.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine your budget. Baitcast reels are available in prices ranging from about $50 to more than $1,000.

    • 2

Look at the number of ball bearings the reel has. In general, the more ball bearings it has, the more smoothly the reel operates. Stainless steel ball bearings are extremely effective. Choose the reel with the highest number of ball bearings.

    • 3

Choose a reel with the proper gear ratio, which relates to how many revolutions the spool of the reel makes each time you turn the handle. Low gear ratios -- for example, 4.1-to-1 -- are good if you are fishing baits, such as crank baits that you want to wind in relatively slowly. Higher gear ratios are better for fishing with quick-moving lures, such as spinner baits.

    • 4

Determine how much line the reel can hold. The figure is written on the box in which the reel is packaged. Confirm it can hold at least 100 yards of the size of fishing line you want to use.

    • 5

Combine the reel with the rod that you plan to use to fish. Hold the combination in your hand and ensure it is comfortable and feels well balanced.
