How to Make Weedless Hooks

Many fish species, including bass, spend at least part of their time in cover such as timber and vegetation. Anglers can catch fish by targeting them in such cover, but they need special equipment to do so. One of the most important pieces is a weedless hook, which reduces the likelihood of the hook snagging on the cover. While weedless hooks are available commercially at bait shops and tackle stores, anglers also can create their own.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 12-inch piece of fishing wire. In most situations, 20-lb. wire works well.

    • 2

Tie a half-hitch knot to secure the wire to the hook. (See the Resources section for knot tying.)

    • 3

Push the knot up the shank so it is flush with the eye of the hook. Wrap the wire tightly around the shank, just below the knot, three times.

    • 4

Bend the wire so it makes a small loop. The small loop should rest just above the barb of the hook. The free end of the wire should face toward the shank of the hook.

    • 5

Wrap the free end of the wire three times around the shank of the hook. Cut off any excess wire.

    • 6

Coat the wire with epoxy where it is wrapped around the hook shank.

    • 7

Allow the epoxy to dry at least 24 hours before using the weedless hook.
