How to Install Mitchell Parts on a 303 Spinning Reel

The Garcia Mitchell 303 is the left-handed version of the 302 saltwater spinning reel. The 302 and 303 are retired from the company's line but are still sought after reels for use and collecting. Adding parts to the reels is part of upkeep and maintenance. To repair and add parts you need the 302 schematics/parts breakdown to understand the reel.
  1. Field Kit

    • When repairing the Mitchell 303, be prepared for field repairs by bringing a utility tool with small screwdrivers and a thin blade. In addition to the tools for replacing parts, it helps to keep a small selection of the more common parts needing replacement or repair. These include the handle, cast bail wire and a set of click springs. Click springs are part of the washer stack found off the housing and spool on the front of the reel.

    Removing and Replacing

    • Use the small screwdrivers to remove the housing and washer stack to get at the click spring. The click spring is a small round device found in the front of the washer stack on the spool rod. When the click spring becomes worn, the reel loses the snappy reel response. Remove the click spring and remember the washer stack order. Replace with a new click spring and put the stack back onto the spool rod.

    Bail Wire

    • Unscrew the bail wire nut using the flat screwdriver. This frees the lock washer. Pull this off and keep them together and pinch the ends of the bail wire. Pull the wire up and off the reel and replace with the new bail wire. Use the old washer and nut to secure the new bail wire on the reel.

    Drag and Other Repairs

    • One common part that needs replacing as it wears out is the drag knob dial. This is the dial found on the end of the reel. When this wears out, the drag feels tight regardless of the setting. Unscrew the drag knob dial and pull off. Replace with a new one by turning it on to the screw clockwise and continuing until you get the drag setting to your liking.

Consult a schematic diagram to get proper part numbers and order them directly from Mitchell. The schematics illustrate common washer stacks and spool housings where problems might occur.
