What Kind of Fishing Rod Is Good for White Bass?

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the white bass averages 10 to 11 inches in length and generally weighs 3/4 to 1 1/2 pounds. At these measurements the white bass is smaller than many other types of bass. White bass are common in many parts of the United States and can be found year-round, especially in southern states where lake waters stay relatively warm most of the year. Based on the small size of the fish, a small, lightweight fishing rod (otherwise known as a fishing pole) is recommended for catching them.
  1. Weight of Rod

    • White bass are known to catch bait as it is falling and that means that they will pull lightly on the bait. In order to feel the tug of the fish you need to use a pole that is light and responsive. Many types of lightweight fishing poles exist, including poles made of fiberglass or graphite and lightweight wood such as bamboo. Because the white bass is a lightweight fish, you do not need to worry about having a pole that is made to withstand the pressure of a great deal of weight.

    Length of Rod

    • Base the length of your pole selection on the area that you plan to fish in. If you are fishing from a boat, a long pole will work well because you have a good deal of open area around you for manipulating the pole and casting. Shorter poles are better in wooded areas with heavy brush and low-hanging branches.

    Line Guides

    • Choose a pole that features high-quality, low-profile, lightweight line guides. These guides will increase sensitivity and allow for a longer casting distance. For the best line movement, look for guides that have rounded ceramic rings where the line travels through.

    Rod Tip

    • Fishing poles come outfitted with a variety of different rod tip styles. For white bass, you will want a fishing pole with a medium or light action tip. This will allow you to feel the bait easier as it moves through the air when cast and through the water. These types of tips will also allow you to feel the weight of the fish easier.
