How to Use Pen Tools to Make Jig Skirts
Jigs are popular lures for species such as bass, crappie, lake trout, walleye, bluegill and pike. Jigs come in various shapes, colors and sizes. The lure is composed of the hook, jig-head (a round metal ball painted to your preferences) and thew jig-skirt. The jig-skirt tucks under the jig-head and has a variety of silicone or rubber strands extending back over and around the shank of the hook. One of the more difficult tasks in jig building is getting the jig-skirt and collar up and onto the hook without losing the strands. A ball point pen makes a handy utensil to accomplish this task.
Things You'll Need

- Jig head and hook
- Silicone or rubber jig skirt materials
- Jig bands

1
Pull off the pen's cap and remove the ink cartridge and roller from the pen's tube. Slide a skirt collar (small rubber band) over the open-end side of the pen tube.
-
2
Stuff the jig-skirt strands into the pen tube so the majority of the strands stick out of the tube.
-
3
Roll the skirt collar off the tube and onto the strands where they come out of the pen's tube, forcing them into the bunching needed for the jig.
-
4
Bring the hook to the now-formed jig-skirt. Slide the hook under the collar and push it through until the collar and skirt are at the base of the jig-head on the hook.
