How to Remove the Hook Out of a Fish's Mouth
For some, the thrill of a catching a fish diminishes over the impending task of having to remove the hook. Along with an ounce of nerve, removing the hook successfully involves the application of certain handling techniques. These techniques minimize impact upon the fish for a healthy return to the wild. They also prevent the likelihood of the fisherman suffering a painful "spike" from the fish's dorsal fin.

1
Wet both hands before handling the fish. Fish have an outer layer of mucous that helps protect them from disease. Handling the fish with wet hands minimizes damage to this protective layer.
-
2
Pass one hand over the fish's head and across the dorsal fin -- the fin just behind the head. Lay the fin flat against the fish. Keep a firm but not overly tight grip upon the fish.
-
3
Observe where the end of the hook is located. If the hook is deep inside the fish prepare to use needlenose pliers to reach inside the fish's mouth to dislodge the hook.
-
4
Grab the end of hook with your fingers or needlenose pliers. Twist the hook and gently dislodge the barb from the fish.
