Getting Sponsored for Fishing Tournaments
-
Maintain a Good Appearance
-
Appearance is everything, and it contributes to your marketability. For example, you're more likely to obtain sponsorships if you maintain a good appearance in the public eye. This consists of not cursing, smoking, drinking or acting foolishly in public. According to professional bass angler Mike Folkestad, this is because people want to believe that they know you based on what they see. And sponsors want someone with a good public perception representing them.
Start Small
-
It's likely that you'll be pursuing sponsorships from fishing-related clothiers and companies. But chances are, you're not the only one seeking sponsorship. A good way to get your foot in the door with these companies is by getting to know some of the sales representatives and continually working your way up the ladder. Sponsorships might start small. For example, a company might pay your registration fee for a tournament as long as you wear their apparel and use their equipment. But over time, as you strengthen your relationship, you could be profiting from such an agreement.
Make a Name For Yourself
-
The easiest way to obtain a sponsorship is by fishing successfully. While this is easier said than done, there are other ways to get yourself noticed. For example, professional fishermen can join groups such as the Professional Tournament Angler's Association. Doing so affiliates you with a credible tournament organization and can also help you network for sponsorship leads. Entering in several tournaments, and placing well in them, helps too.
Do Your Homework
-
Chances are sponsors aren't going to be looking for you; you have to be looking for them. A big part of trying to obtain sponsorships is knowing exactly what the company you're pursuing does and how you can use these products to make both the company and yourself more marketable. Knowledge of the company and their products as well as why you would be a good fit for their dollars could help you beat out others looking for the same thing.
