How to Tie a Glow Blug

The glow bug is a basic yarn ball that is used to imitate an egg by fly anglers. Tying the fly is easy but you must take your time and properly shape the material to create a round egg. The glow bug may be tied using a solid color or a combination of colors to imitate the eggs of different fish species. The fly is most effective during the spring and fall when fish are spawning. Anglers who drift the fly along the bottom of a river will find fish targeting loose eggs as a food source.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hook in the fly tying vise. Start the thread at the one half point on the hook shank. Make several wraps to secure the thread and cut away the tag end. The tag is the excess thread hanging off the hook.

    • 2

Cut two thick strips of egg yarn and lay the yarn on the top of the hook shank. Wrap the thread around the yarn several times to secure it to the hook shank. Your thread position must be at the one half point on the yarn.

    • 3

Pull the yarn forward over the bend in the hook and make several wraps of thread behind the yarn. Pull the yarn back towards the eye of the hook and make several thread wraps in front of the yarn. Use your fingers to stroke the yarn in an upward motion.

    • 4

Pull the yarn upwards and use your scissors to cut the yarn straight across the top. Leave about one-half inch of yarn on the hook. Use your fingers to fluff the yarn around the hook shank and form the ball. The ball will compress in the water and it will resemble an egg.
