Reef Fishing in Belize

Where to Fish
-
Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize and lies less a mile from the Barrier Reef, making it an ideal place to fish. You will see extremely well here, as the flats are shallow and the water is crystal clear. The tarpon feeding grounds stretch for more than 50 miles, so chances are you’ll be pulling in a tarpon or two.
Another popular spot is the Turneffe Atoll, approximately 30 miles off the mainland. The vast area of islands, flats, lagoons and reefs here make an ideal breeding ground for bonefish and permit.
When to Fish
-
The prime time for reef fishing is generally between the months of May through November. If you are planning a trip to Belize in February, don’t despair. The Belize Tourism Board reports most species are found year-round. You will be comfortable any day of the year thanks to the mild sub-tropical climate of Belize. The average temperature is between 71 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit. You will likely catch more permit during March through May, while July and August are better for tarpon fishing.
Species
-
Grouper are one of the many species of Belize reef fish. Grouper, cubera snapper, gray snapper, mutton snapper, permit and barracuda are all found swimming over the reefs. Commonly found in the open water just outside the reef are dolphin, bonito, blackfin tuna, wahoo, sail fish, and king mackerel. Among reef fishermen’s favorites is the tarpon, weighing up to 350 pounds, and known for its spectacular leaps into the air. Bonefish, tarpon and permit are protected as “catch and release" species.
Tackle
-
You will need a 10 weight rod for tarpon, while an 8 rod is sufficient for bonefish and permit. A tough, reliable drag and a sturdy reel are other necessities. Bring a selection of sizes and colors for flies. The experts at Belize Fish Finder recommend flies tied in sizes 2/0, 3/0, and 4/0. If you hire a charter, they will provide all the necessary equipment and gear.
Charters
-
Generally, an experienced charter boat charges a standard price for a half or full day on the water, tackle and gear. Some may even offer a picnic lunch. For a more luxurious experience, Belize Sailing Vacations claims to have lush accommodations and "all the amenities you would expect at an all-inclusive resort." You can stay right on the boat, allowing you more options as to where and when you fish.
