Fly Fishing for Carp in Ohio

Whereas fly fishing for smallmouth bass, panfish, and trout is still more common in the State of Ohio, fly fishing for carp is gaining traction with many anglers. The common carp is a fish that can live in almost any environment, and grows to sizes that make it a challenge for fly fishermen.
  1. Geography

    • Carp can be found throughout the entire state of Ohio, and are not limited by any geographical features. Carp are even found in many of the polluted waterways that can't support other species of fish.

    Species

    • The common carp and grass carp are most commonly found in Ohio. Grass carp often appear white or silver in appearance with possible streaks of green on the top of the fish. Common carp have a variety of coloration mixes that include silver, green, white and gold.

    Licenses & Regulations

    • Ohio residents between the ages of 16 and 65 are required to purchase a fishing license, and residents over the age of 65 are required to have a senior fishing license. All non-residents regardless of age must have a fishing license in order to go fly fishing for carp in Ohio. As of 2010 a resident license cost $19 per person per year, and a senior license cost $10. Non-resident licenses can be bought for three days or a full year, and as of 2010 cost $19 to $40.

    Best Fly Equipment

    • The best fly fishing equipment for going after carp are strong and durable rods, also referred to as "heavy action" rods. Many new fly fishing rods are made of material such as graphite, and for older fly fishing poles glass is better than bamboo. Carp can grow much larger than the average trout, which is why larger and heavier equipment is required.

    Best Flies

    • Carp are mostly vegetarian by nature, although they will occasionally eat minnows or artificial lures resembling minnows. Because of this, fly fishing flies that look like local vegetation or bits of weeds have a higher level of success than flies that appear like insects.
