How to Set Up a Saltwater Fly Fishing Rod

- Saltwater fly rod and reel spooled with line
- Leader line
- Assorted saltwater flies and feathered lures.

Assemble the fly rod by inserting the rod sections into each other in order of decreasing size until you insert the rod tip section. Most fly rods come in three to four sections, which can be assembled quickly if you lay out the sections in order of size, starting with the handle.

Turn the rod sections so that the line guides are aligned.

Attach the round fly reel to the handle of the rod by placing the reel foot under the rod seat on the front of the handle and sliding the rear rod seat over the rear foot of the reel.

Turn the lock nut on the rod handle clockwise behind the reel to secure it to the rod.

Thread the fly line from the reel up through the line guides and out the tip.

Tie a leader to the main line using a nail knot.

Tie a fly or streamer to the leader or attach a fly and tippet line to the leader using a clinch knot.
