How to Clean a Fly Fishing Rod
-
1
Apply a small amount of the liquid cleaner to a soft clean cloth. Thoroughly wipe down the cork handle of the rod. Work the cleaner around the handle following the bands of the cork rather than using a back-and-forth motion. Take care to avoid the reel seat and any metal such as the reel locks. Rinse thoroughly, using a towel and water.

2
Apply a small amount of mild metal polish or cleaner to another cloth and gently buff the rings and metal parts of the reel seat. Take care not to damage any exotic woods that are often featured on reel seats. Thoroughly wipe off any excess or remaining polish. Buff to a shine.

3
With the brush, thoroughly clean the eyes and guides of the fly rod. Through use, often times debris and algae may accumulate on the eyes and guides which can affect the performance of the fly line. After brushing, wipe down the eyes with soapy water.
-
4
Wipe down the entire rod, past the cork handle, with soapy water. Pay attention to any areas with stubborn stains or buildup. Use the brush if necessary to loosen dirt or grime. Rinse the rod with clean water and wipe dry.

5
Finally, clean the female portion of the rod at the connecting point with a cotton-tipped swab and soapy water. Remove any debris and foreign matter. Swab out with clean water then swab dry. Apply a thin coating of white candle wax to the male end of the rod at the connection point to ensure a secure connection which will not freeze during use.
