How to Build a Fly Rod

Fishing is a very relaxing and enjoyable sport. It's fun to sit on the bank, stand in the middle of a rushing creek or sit in a boat, then throw your line into the water and reel it in. Sometimes you catch a fish and sometimes you don't. Fly fishing rods are one kind of equipment you can use. As they're expensive, you can build your own.

      Buy a rod blank and components. Rod blanks come in different sizes, so be sure to get components that will fit the rod blank you buy. Line weight and rod length is also important when choosing the casting style you intend to use.

      Get a fly-tying bodkin. This is a thread burnisher that will make a professional wrap job by pushing the thread wraps together. Apply epoxy to the wrap.

      Use a thread tightening device to compress the spring by keeping tension on the rod as you screw down the wing nut.

      Rotate the rod while the epoxy on the wraps dry. Professionals use a mechanical rod turner, but you can use a cardboard box with notches cut in it. Turn the rod until the finish sets, because if you leave it in one position, the liquid will collect at the bottom of the rod and you will have a big mess to clean up. Make sure you have a sizing chart to make sure you get the correct components for your rod. The outer and inner circumference has to be the same size where it will sit.
