How to Tie a Propeller Fly
If normal flies aren't attracting the types of fish you're looking for on your excursion, you may want to consider a propeller fly. A propeller fly, colloquially known as a "Pistol Pete," is a fly lure with a spinner propeller attached to the back of it. Unlike many fly lures, it does not look very much like an authentic fly. However, its propeller does allow for more motion on the surface of the water in addition to a greater reflection of sunlight, which can result in fish taking the bait that might not ordinarily do so.
Things You'll Need
- Fly-tying scissors
- Fly-tying thread
- Propellers
- 2X shank hooks
- Metal beads
- Head cement
Instructions
-
-
1
Wrap several turns of fly-tying thread on the shank of your hook, at the location where you will be anchoring the bead.
-
2
Attach your propeller blade onto the shaft of your hook, with the spinner positioned to propel water in the direction of the hook.
-
3
Push the bead onto your hook, adding thread for snugness if necessary.
-
4
Slide the bead back off the thread wrap and apply a drop of the cement to fit it in place. Make sure it is positioned far enough down the shaft of your hook to allow free spinning of the propeller.
-
5
Finish tying your fly pattern once the cement has dried. You now have a completed propeller fly ready to be cast.
