1
Determine the X value required for your dry fly fishing application. Use 3x to 4x for size 8 and larger hooks, 4x or 5x for size 10 to 14 hooks and 5x to 7x for size 14 to 24 hooks.

2
Attach a supple butt or spring creek Frog Hair leader to the fly line with a loop-to-loop connection. Use a leader with an X value that matches the tippet size. Pull on the leader to remove all coils from the material.
-
3
Pull one-foot of tippet from the spool and clip it free. Attach the tippet to the end of the leader with a surgeon's knot. Overlap the two materials and fold them to create one loop. Feed the tag ends through the loop two times and pull the knot tight. Clip the tag ends flush to the knot. The tippet to leader connection is not necessary, but it preserves the leader and allows for multiple fly changes throughout the day.
-
4
Tie the end of the tippet to the fly with a clinch knot. Feed the tag end through the eye of the hook and wrap it around the main tippet six times.
-
5
Feed the tag end through the gap created at the base of the wraps and pull on the main tippet to tighten the knot. Clip the tag end flush with the knot.
