How to Tie a Rope to a Walking Stick

The walking stick provides increased stability as you navigate a rugged hiking trail. Certain companies offer premade walking sticks and hiking poles made from lightweight materials such as carbon fiber. While these models may feature stylish designs, they don't come cheap. According to the outdoor experts at ABC-of-Hiking, walking sticks generally have a rope or string tied to the top of the handle. Insert your wrist through the length of rope to maintain control of the walking stick. Tie a durable rope made of nylon or leather onto your wooden walking stick.

Choose a properly sized drill bit that corresponds with the width of your rope. Fasten the drill bit onto the front of a power drill. Drill a horizontal hole through the walking stick about 6 inches from the top.

Cut an 8 to 10 inch piece from your length of leather or nylon rope. Burn the ends of the nylon with a lighter to prevent the rope from fraying. Insert the piece of leather or nylon rope through the hole in the walking stick.
