How to Cut a Walking Stick

Walking sticks are as old as humanity. Ever since people have been walking, sticks have been carved and treated to be used as support. A walking stick can be used for providing relief during a long hike or even for fending off an animal attack; the walking stick's uses are only limited by your imagination. You can purchase a walking stick at any sporting good store, but making your own will give you a sense of pride in the walking stick that you can't obtain from a purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a dead tree branch in the forest. The branch should be thick enough to support your weight, fairly straight and roughly as tall as your chest.

    • 2

Break off any branches that are attached to your walking stick. These small branches will ruin the aesthetic of your walking stick and make the rest of the process challenging.

    • 3

Scrape all bark from the walking stick using your pocket knife. This process can take a considerable amount of time depending on the size and type of wood that comprises your walking stick. The walking stick should be an even light color when finished.

    • 4

Saw the ends of the stick off evenly using a hand saw. Having an even end ensures stability when you're using the walking stick.

    • 5

Sand the surface of the walking stick using sandpaper. Sanding the walking stick will smooth the surface and prevent splintering during use.

    • 6

Rub linseed oil over the surface of the walking stick using a hand towel. The more thoroughly you cover the stick, the smoother the stick will become. Allow the walking stick to dry completely before use.
