How to Waterproof Gore-Tex

Gore-Tex is a special type of material that is generally either waterproof or water-resistant. This material is used to make clothing such as boots, gloves and jackets. Gore-Tex is marketed for those who spend time outdoors in the elements. Many outdoor enthusiasts opt to add another waterproof layer to Gore-Tex items, despite its water-resistant nature.

Instructions

  1. Waterproofing

    • 1

Lay the cardboard on your workbench or other outdoor work area. Be sure that the cardboard covers the entire work area.

    • 2

Lay your Gore-Tex items on top of the cardboard.

    • 3

Spread out your Gore-Tex item as much as possible. The point is to make as much of the material as accessible as possible.

    • 4

Spray the exposed layer of Gore-Tex in long smooth motions. You might notice that the material appears darker as it is sprayed --- the Gore-Tex will return to its normal color after the waterproofing spray dries.

    • 5

Let the Gore-Tex dry for approximately five minutes. The time it takes to dry will vary depending on what waterproofing spray you choose.

    • 6

Rotate the item so that you have access to the untreated side.

    • 7

      Spray the untreated side.

    • 8

Allow the item to dry for 24 hours before using it. Using it before the 24 hours might cause the waterproof coating to wear off.
