How to Fight a Bear

Generally bears want nothing to do with humans and if one hears you coming, he will probably run. But if you are an outdoor adventurer, there is a small chance that you may catch a bear by surprise, and learning how to fight him just might save your life.

Play dead if you have no escape options. Curl up, face down and avoid eye contact with the bear. She may come to you and sniff, so do not whimper, and try to breathe slowly as to not give away your act. If the bear tries to flip you over, remain tightly curled and hope that she gets bored and goes away before taking a big, juicy bite.

Keep a can of bear spray in your pocket if the time comes to start fighting back against the bear. Remember that the pepper spray is really going to aggravate the bear, so spray quickly, directly in his eyes.

Use this chance to sucker punch the bear, kicking her in the groin, poking her eyes or clawing the face with your fingernails. Whatever fighting techniques you decide to employ after the pepper spray, do them quickly and then run like crazy while she is temporarily blinded.
