Special Gear Considerations for Winter Backpacking
-
Clothing
-
A winter backpacker needs to dress in layers, with the underwear layer wicking moisture away from the skin, the middle layer providing insulation and retaining body heat, and the outer layer protecting from water and wind. Avoid wearing cotton during the winter. The winter backpacker should wear warm and insulating gloves, hats and socks. Waterproof boots are also a good idea for winter hiking.
Snow Equipment
-
Depending on the terrain being hiked, a winter backpacker may need crampons, ice axes, cross-country skis or snowshoes. Adjustable snow poles can help maintain balance on snowy or icy terrain. A snow shovel is also a good idea in the event of an avalanche.
Other Equipment
-
A winter backpacker should carry multiple ways to make fire. A backpack that can carry or lash on extra gear such as skis and snowshoes is helpful in winter. Sleeping bags are rated by comfort at different temperatures, and you should carry a bag that is rated 10 degrees lower than the lowest temperature you anticipate. Sleeping pads and sleeping bag liners can help retain body temperature at night. Headlamps and two-way radios are important safety gear for winter backpackers.
